First, please see the two posts below about why armed citizens often want more than a mere handful of ammo in the magazine. We have been considering the Aurora / Batman theater scenario.
But, this new fact added to the scenario is for the unarmed reader to consider.
This time, you are armed as in the scenario below, but you are seated on the left side of the same row in the theater. In other words, Holmes and fellow-demons enter from the right exit door, but you are about thirty feet from the left side exit door, straight ahead. You are on the aisle. You have obediently familiarized yourself with the exits as instructed on the big screen before the show began, and there it is, marked in red: EXIT.
Do you attack? Do you take it upon yourself to defend the theater and everyone now jumping over seats to get out? Draw and fire across the theater? Probably not.
I say run. Grab your loved ones and sprint for that exit when Holmes fires that first shotgun blast into the back of the theater (which he did).
Because we don’t arm up to protect you.
It might happen, but don’t bet your life on it. After all, armed citizens are not counting on you, or the police, or the security guards, or random chance, or luck, or any man or woman for protection from murderers. You shouldn’t either. Maybe some other moviegoer in the Aurora theater was armed—but was sitting on that other side, near that exit door, and able to escape.
