Aimpoint: What is New and What Will Not Be New

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

For those of you who might appreciate the bit of sharpening up 2 power magnification would offer in a red-dot sight, Aimpoint told me the company now offers no 2x products (not even the hunting scopes) and has no plans to offer a sight with 2x.

New is a law enforcement only model, the Patrol Rifle Optic (PRO), essentially an M3 with 2 MOA dot, with the quick release mount (model QRP2).  This sight comes with a clear rear lens cap so that the officer need not flip up the rear cover to acquire the dot and target.  Emphasis is on keeping the cost down for law enforcement departments and getting the units to them; thus, the initial offering is law enforcement only.

For those of you who doubt its existence and suspected it was a joke, here are a photo and a very short video proving that it is for real at MSRP around $350.

Chiappa Rhino Revolvers: Added Details

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

I posted yesterday about the Italian-made Chiappa’s remarkably reduced felt recoil, even firing .357 magnum.  A reader asked about the load.  They made .38 available and I shot some, but I specifically fired the .357 made available to test the claims about recoil reduction.  The ammo was .357 magnum caliber, CCI Blazer 125 grain.  Thanks, James, for asking for this important detail.

These guns feature an external hammer but this cocks the internal hammer.  Thus, the hammer spur does not stay back once the hammer is cocked.  Odd, huh?  A small red extension protrudes upward giving visual and tactile confirmation that the hammer is cocked.

Incidentally, Italian gun-makers are well-represented at the show.  Another little known detail: Yes, the gun take its name from its appearance, but the owner of the company is named Rino Chiappa.

Kel-Tec Shotgun Model KSG, 12-gauge–A Short Video Demonstration

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

This company representative gives a quick description and no-rounds-fired demonstration of the Kel-Tec Model KSG, 12 gauge, compact shotgun, published here on this Youtube video I took.

I badly wanted to shoot this one but it was not available for firing.  Lightweight, solid feel, beware to keep your support, pump-operating hand between the two extensions molded on either end of the pump handle.  If you grip carelessly rearward, you will suffer a severe pinch.  Of course, a solution to this is to add your own vertical forearm grip.

Notice, he said available during 3rd quarter this year.  Demand is high for Kel-Tec products and retailers and distributors are fussing about the lack of supply.

Ruger’s Gunsite .308 Scout Rifle

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Designed to be the rifle Jeff Cooper advocated, this bolt-action, detachable box magazine fed .308 short rifle carries an MSRP of $995.  Iron sights are identical to the Mini-14′s, but the rail is there for the extended eye relief scope.  You may also mount a regular scope with no gunsmithing required.  Magazines are by Accuracy International since the M-14 and FN-FAL magazines did not feed reliably.  I did not get to test fire one.  Light weight, good, fast handling characteristics.

Friday, October 1st, 2010

October 2008, Munich. Leaving Oktoberfest, on the train to the airport, a young German woman caught my accent and immediately identified my son and me as Americans.  She asked, “Who do think will win your election?”

Watching the World This Friday

Friday, June 11th, 2010

In the news today:

  • Taliban hangs 7-year old boy, guilty, they say, of spying for western troops.
Yes, I know I wrote of this yesterday. This is profound and worthy of repetition.
Commentary by MJM: Muslims of the world, you need to look closely on the swinging corpse of this child. He is your future under Sharia Law.It’s not that moral codes are bad. It’s that your handing that much power to any form of government empowers tyrants.
This poor boy’s noose is your tightrope. (more…)
