Concealed Carry Tip for Women

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Here, at The Firearm Blog, I found Gracie’s detailed advice for women on how to carry a handgun, concealed, while wearing a dress.  Gracie blogs here, at Packing Pretty.  Her method looks surprisingly effective.  Haven’t tried it, myself.  Thanks for posting.

Why Constitutional Carry Is Important

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

If you are new to the argument, here it is:

Having consistently passed handgun carry permit legislation at the state level, and having watched experience and statistics disprove the opposition’s lies, advocates of freedom now turn to “constitutional carry”: legislated recognition that the right is a constitutional right, not a privilege.  In states with “constitutional carry” such as Vermont, Alaska, Montana, and Arizona, basically, the law-abiding citizen needs no permission slip from the government to carry a gun.  That permission is granted by God, and codified in our Constitution’s Bill of Rights, as well as at state level. Constitutional carry legislation is the representative body’s way of telling the rest of the government that the right to keep and bear arms is not fair game for government control.

This is not a matter of the mere inconvenience of applying for a plastic card, or paying a fee, or renewing.  Here is why constitutional carry is vital to you—even to those of you who do not “like guns” and have no plan to acquire one.

Constitutional carry sparks a mind-shift from your having to go begging to the government for limited liberties, to your exuberant exercise of the natural, expansive, full freedoms inherent as natural rights.  These freedoms are a double-gift—a part of your birthright, and then a legacy left to you by your founders.  Constitutional carry advances the right to keep and bear arms from a statutory permission slip that may be revoked by the next legislature, to a constitutional right that no person has the right to revoke.

The .gov often almost instinctively presumes to exercise control over your freedoms.  Asking your state legislator to pass constitutional carry is a statement reminding the government that it lacks the lawful authority to send out bands of uniformed officers and soldiers to confiscate guns from American citizens—as happened in New Orleans over nothing more than bad weather.  If they have the power to grant permission, they can take it away just as quickly.

I urge that we work closely with our known, strong supporters of the right to keep and bear arms, to make constitutional carry the next strategic restoration of the right.  We should express our desire, thank them for the surprising gains already won, and ask them what we can do to help take the next step—constitutional carry.  This is going to take time.

Open Carry Contributed to Gun-owner’s Murder?

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

This story out of Richmond, VA, picked up by Say Uncle reports the murder of a convenience store patron who was carrying his own handgun, openly.  The killer apparently spotted him, stole his gun, and shot him in the process.  Facts sketchy.

MJM’s commentary from the story:

1) Do not sit around in your car at 2:30 a.m.  Nothing good happens out there after about 10:30 anyway.  (Has nothing to do with the murder of the open-carry armed citizen, but the killers hit these condition-white people, too.)

2) The killer picks the time and place to attack, even when you are just buying a candy bar after pumping gas at BP.

3) The gun control side is using hostility to open carry to divide and conquer.  Resist this.  Those gun owners and supporters of the RTKBA who disrespect others who carry openly jeopardize their own rights.  I may think open carry is an in-your-face expression of insanity (I do not.) but the guy shopping in Kroger’s with a gun on his hip, not shooting anyone is, well, uh, not shooting anyone.  I do not consider him any more dangerous than anyone else.  I do not “feel threatened” because I can see his gun.  Indeed, since he is carrying openly as he peruses the candy section, I can see that he is not shooting anyone and not acting in any threatening manner.  He is, however, conditioning others to accept that the mere visible presence of a gun is no cause to freak out, whether that is any component of his motive or not.

If we operate from the guiding principle, “default to freedom,” we cannot go wrong, and cannot be picked apart piecemeal.  Open carry is not evil.  Murder is evil.  I advocate the freedom to choose to bear arms openly.

What’s On Your Wish List?: Alan Gottlieb Explains Black Friday Gun-buying

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Alan offers his theories.  I want to believe that the anti-gun propaganda barriers are coming down, making guns look like great gifts, even to people formerly abhorred by the firearm .  (Hint, hint: the EAG Tactical carbine from Bravo Company would sure make MJM happy.)  While Santa is at it, replace my stocking with an ammo can.  I could use a few of those, too, not that I’m stockpiling ammo, or anything like that.

Alan notes from USA Today: “USA Today reported that the FBI’s National Instant Check center logged more than 129,000 background check requests last Friday, a new record surpassing the 97,848 checks conducted on Black Friday in 2008. ”

Our current leadership, the collapse of Middle Eastern dictatorships into what we suspect will be a new form of theocratic dictatorship, the Iranian nuclear weapons program that we were all supposed to believe did not exist, the economic chaos in Europe, our own Occupy whining and the .gov’s insipid response, and conditions in general just do not point to an era of prosperity and stability.  So: guns make great gifts.

Did I mention that this is what MJM wants for Christmas?  I don’t think Bravo Company will mind my promoting their carbine, and making my wish list clear has to be a “fair use” of the picture.  Give one of these, and your loved-one will know how much you care.  It comes complete with a trip to a carbine course with Pat Rogers.  I’ll settle for some sausage, cheddar cheese, and good beer, but one of these would be nice.

SayUncle Takes On Internet Nonsense

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

This is one of those “You have got to read…” posts.  Really.  Full of good, fun, gun-related reminders.  Also, a good reminder that, while the Internet is the Land of Opinion Opportunity, all opinions are not created equal, no matter how firmly held.

Why to Carry a Gun

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

…because you never know when or where you may encounter someone else armed, but without your peaceful intentions.  It could even happen when you just “run out to WalMart” for that quick trip, right after supper.

Oh, this is the same shopping center I have mentioned before, where I sat down to lunch at noon on a June Friday, and watched a carjacking at knife-point unfold in the parking lot.  Not a bad part of town, not a rough neighborhood, not a crime-ridden shopping area, this area almost defines “ordinary.”

Request re Photos Supporting Discreet Carry for Women

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

A reader writes, asking for photographs of women in professional dress, carrying concealed.  She is writing an essay advancing the proposition that concealed carry adds to a woman’s options in the employment marketplace.  She would like to support her premise with some pictures, other than hot-day-at-the-range pix.  So, if any of your readers can offer a source, please comment.

Transitions

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

Comment read in local online “paper” today, about a shooting at an apartment complex, reminds us to be alert especially during “transitions”:

girlnextdoor writes:
I have heard of criminals going to nice apartment’s and waiting near the back entrance for people to come home late at night or leave early in the morning to rob and car jack them. That is what a police officer told me. I will never live in another one, I dont care how nice they are. You just dont know who is coming and going.

“Transitions” between locations, lighting, movement, and events, impose additional risk.  Example: You are in little immediate danger of a car-jacking rolling down the street at 40 mph.  But, when you 1) stop, in a  2) darker  3) parking lot, you are at greater risk.  There are 3–count ‘em–three transitions there.  Maybe more.

Another example: If your driveway winds behind the house, under the trees, and away from the streetlight, you do not want to just pull into the driveway and zip around behind the house, into the dark, then fidgeting with your keys, candy bar wrappers, mail, purse or whatever, still in your seat belt, sitting there with your night vision messed up and the radio still on.

And, girlnextdoor is right: Stepping from the safety of your workplace or home, outside, into the dark, is a transition that presents the bad people with more opportunity.  Best to keep the eyes, ears, and nose (Do you smell cigarette smoke?) all working.

(To those who think the writer of this blog must be paranoid: Hey, don’t worry about it.  Just ignore all of the above.  You may remain oblivious, if you please and just take your chances.)

Poland, Gun Control, and the Ghosts of Marx, Lenin, and Stalin

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

Last weekend, I furnished the range and LuckyGunner furnished ammo and guns for their staff to shoot.  After the shots echoed away and the smoke cleared, we sat down for hot chili cooked over an open fire.

The shooters included a guy from Poland who had never shot before.  He explained to me how hard it is to own a gun in Poland and that he would have to show “a valid reason for wanting to own a gun,” such as proving that his life is in danger.

My response: “Hell, you Polish have the Russians on one side, and the Germans on the other!  Your life is constantly in danger!  What more valid reason could you need?  Poland should be an armed camp!”

I checked it out and was surprised to find that the Poles have the lowest rate of gun ownership in Europe.

Sean asks Sergeant Major  Brian Searcy (US Army, ret.) of  TigerSwan, the never-ending question.
