Why to Carry a Gun

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

…because you never know when or where you may encounter someone else armed, but without your peaceful intentions.  It could even happen when you just “run out to WalMart” for that quick trip, right after supper.

Oh, this is the same shopping center I have mentioned before, where I sat down to lunch at noon on a June Friday, and watched a carjacking at knife-point unfold in the parking lot.  Not a bad part of town, not a rough neighborhood, not a crime-ridden shopping area, this area almost defines “ordinary.”

Request re Photos Supporting Discreet Carry for Women

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

A reader writes, asking for photographs of women in professional dress, carrying concealed.  She is writing an essay advancing the proposition that concealed carry adds to a woman’s options in the employment marketplace.  She would like to support her premise with some pictures, other than hot-day-at-the-range pix.  So, if any of your readers can offer a source, please comment.

Transitions

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

Comment read in local online “paper” today, about a shooting at an apartment complex, reminds us to be alert especially during “transitions”:

girlnextdoor writes:
I have heard of criminals going to nice apartment’s and waiting near the back entrance for people to come home late at night or leave early in the morning to rob and car jack them. That is what a police officer told me. I will never live in another one, I dont care how nice they are. You just dont know who is coming and going.

“Transitions” between locations, lighting, movement, and events, impose additional risk.  Example: You are in little immediate danger of a car-jacking rolling down the street at 40 mph.  But, when you 1) stop, in a  2) darker  3) parking lot, you are at greater risk.  There are 3–count ‘em–three transitions there.  Maybe more.

Another example: If your driveway winds behind the house, under the trees, and away from the streetlight, you do not want to just pull into the driveway and zip around behind the house, into the dark, then fidgeting with your keys, candy bar wrappers, mail, purse or whatever, still in your seat belt, sitting there with your night vision messed up and the radio still on.

And, girlnextdoor is right: Stepping from the safety of your workplace or home, outside, into the dark, is a transition that presents the bad people with more opportunity.  Best to keep the eyes, ears, and nose (Do you smell cigarette smoke?) all working.

(To those who think the writer of this blog must be paranoid: Hey, don’t worry about it.  Just ignore all of the above.  You may remain oblivious, if you please and just take your chances.)

Poland, Gun Control, and the Ghosts of Marx, Lenin, and Stalin

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

Last weekend, I furnished the range and LuckyGunner furnished ammo and guns for their staff to shoot.  After the shots echoed away and the smoke cleared, we sat down for hot chili cooked over an open fire.

The shooters included a guy from Poland who had never shot before.  He explained to me how hard it is to own a gun in Poland and that he would have to show “a valid reason for wanting to own a gun,” such as proving that his life is in danger.

My response: “Hell, you Polish have the Russians on one side, and the Germans on the other!  Your life is constantly in danger!  What more valid reason could you need?  Poland should be an armed camp!”

I checked it out and was surprised to find that the Poles have the lowest rate of gun ownership in Europe.

Quote of the Day: Has He Ever Shot a Coyote?

Sunday, October 9th, 2011

Seen on AR15.com forum, where two members were debating the merits of Cain, Romney, and Perry.  They pretty much dismissed Mitt Romney over his willingness to ban “assault weapons.”  Then, they turned to trying to figure out whether Herman Cain would be a strong supporter of the right to arm up, and this exchange followed:

Question: “I wonder what Cain’s stance is on bailing out large banks that committed fraud by reselling the same Mortgage-backed securities over and over again.”

Reply: “I don’t know, but more importantly has he ever shot a coyote?”

Oh, the power of a few well-chosen words, coupled to an explosive and bloody image….

The Optimum Compact Pistol Search: One Feature Trumps All Others

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

I am preparing to report on my search for the optimum compact, 9mm pistol.  I made my choice, and am waiting only for my test-firing round-count to make it to 500.  You might find my Excel spreadsheet to be useful and I will be sure to post it, comparing the various dimensions and features in table form.

However, regardless of my efforts at objectivity, one pistol trumps all others, if you are a male buyer.  It appears that Glock is the gun for guys.  Buy a Glock and….

Wisconsin Recall Vote: Tomorrow

Monday, August 8th, 2011

Wisconsiners, please head to the polls, and return your recalled Republicans to office.  Teach the Madison Marxists that they must coexist with conservatives.

Armed Robbery Convinces Victim to Arm Up: W-EMT Applies For a Carry Permit

Monday, August 8th, 2011

In this local story, a man was parked at a local fast food restaurant, operating from its free Wi-Fi signal.  That is fine, but surfing the web from your car in a parking lot after 2:00 a.m. violates MJM’s “Nothing good happens out there after 10:30.” rule.  Additionally, we know that sitting in a car gives people a false sense of security while, at the same time, curtailing mobility and 360 degree visibility.  Not good.  Sure enough, a robber spots him and pins the “target of opportunity” label on him.

The story is a good study in how to avoid being a crime victim, but I comment here only because of the victim’s own written comment to the online story.

W-EMT writes: Yes, it was a rather interesting experience… I think I’ll find a new spot to use WIFI. But, huge thanks go out to the responding officers. All I did was make a phone call and keep the guy in my sights. Speaking of sights, already signed up for HCP class.

W-EMT seems to be the sort to keep his wits about him and appears to have already absorbed lessons from the encounter, one of which is “Go armed.”  Other comments offer additional advice on things like draw from front pocket carry while seated in a car.

W-EMT: welcome to the right to keep and bear arms community.  Glad you survived to join us, even with sense of humor intact.

I am going to add: The life style of younger people often puts them at greater risk.  Getting off work from the restaurant at 1:00 in the morning puts you on the streets at an hour when many older Americans, with regular jobs, are home in bed.  The single life leads you to places less than tame, and at some higher risk hours.  And, it may take some time to fully appreciate the depravity of some of the animals out there masquerading as human beings.  Living in apartment complexes, where many younger people reside, always adds en element of random excitement, too.
